Opentrons Labworks has raised $40 million in a Series E financing round led by healthcare investor Avego, with additional backing from BroadOak Capital Partners. The company plans to use the capital to expand its robotics, software and data infrastructure tools.

The funding will support the development of artificial intelligence and robotics systems designed to work together across the experimental cycle, including the design, execution and analysis of scientific experiments. Opentrons also plans to invest in AI-driven experimental execution, extend its automation capabilities and enter additional markets and geographic regions.

The company said the investment will help accelerate protocol development through its software and AI, broaden the capabilities of its robots and instruments, and deepen the integration of its tools with the wider laboratory automation ecosystem.

James Flexner, managing partner at Avego, said drug developers and AI companies are advancing toward automated workflows capable of producing usable data, adding that he sees an opportunity for autonomous science to converge around Opentrons’ platform. Opentrons CEO James Atwood said the company had made laboratory automation accessible to a broad range of laboratories and that its systems are designed to allow AI to run experiments directly.

Opentrons reports that it has deployed more than 11,000 robots in laboratories across over 80 countries. Its customers include academic groups, diagnostic laboratories and global pharmaceutical companies. Earlier this year, the company announced that it was using Nvidia’s Isaac and Cosmos AI platforms to generate training data for the development and deployment of physical AI-enabled laboratory robotics.
